The start of May was particularly busy and productive for the world of hip-hop. Whether it’s all of the new music that has been released, the exciting festivals taking place, or the joyous feeling knowing that summer is just right around the corner, it’s an exciting time to be a music lover and a hip-hop fanatic.
Congratulations are in order for Kendrick Lamar, who earlier this month secured himself another number 1 album with his latest effort DAMN. Led by his hit singles “HUMBLE” and “DNA,” Kendrick was able to sell a whopping 600,000+ units in just the first week of its release, and since then, it has officially gone platinum. In addition to Kendrick, we also got new albums from Wale, Logic and Mary J Blige, who all dropped impressive bodies of work this past week.
With “Festival Season” underway, one of the year’s most highly anticipated events, Made In America, announced their star-studded 2017 lineup. Stepping things up a notch this year, the one and only Jay Z will be headlining the 2-day festival alongside his artist J. Cole. Other performers include Chainsmokers, Solange, Migos, 21 Savage, Pusha T, DMX and many others. Taking place at the Benjamin Franklin Parkway on Labor Day weekend in Philly, this year’s show has potential to be the best one yet.
This past Monday (May 1), the annual Met Gala event took place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art where the cream of the crop of the entertainment world dazzled the carpet with expensive get-ups and fancy accessories. While many hip-hop artists have attended Met Gala events in the past, it was the 2017 shindig that was inundated with a surplus of hip-hop flavor and as fans of the culture, it was beautiful to see. Everyone who’s anyone was in attendance including: Diddy, The Weekend, Frank Ocean, Migos, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, A$AP Rocky, Wiz Khalifa, Lil Yachty and so many others. Hip-hop’s presence at this year’s Met Gala was more than felt — it was the talk of the night.
